Only those who define what it is to be state of the art metal in 2008 could ever be considered worthy to play under the Metal Hammer flag, and without doubt the Defenders of the Faith tour lives up to its epic billing!
Co-headlining in this first year are epic Swedish metallers Opeth alongside their savage countrymen at arms Arch Enemy.
Two more very special guests will be announced shortly, making this a four band package that will shake the very foundations of every venue it touches. As a statement of intent it doesn't get any more in your face and heavy fucking metal than the Defenders of the Faith.
Opeth have just released their very first double live album, 'The Roundhouse Tapes', to rave reviews in both the rock and mainstream press and have a brand new studio album scheduled for early summer, while Arch Enemy's 'Rise of The Tyrant' opus is being hailed as one of the pivotal metal releases of 2007. Together on stage these two titans of the scene typify the Metal Hammer ethos of no fucking compromises.
The tour will be backed by substantial coverage in Metal Hammer both in print and online.

Opeth have confirmed that they'll appear on the so called Melloboat, a organized ferrytrip between Stockholm and Helsinki. The spectacle, christened "The 21st anniversary schizoid boat" is being organized by the Mellotronen record label and will feature a nothing less but stunning line-up of bands. Among them Opeth, Katatonia, Comus (re-uniting for their first gig since 1972), Leafhound, Trettioåriga kriget, Anekdoten and many more. Some exclusive secret gigs will also take place that is not to be missed!! It's a 24hr cruise that leaves Stockholm on the 8th of March 2008. The double album features songs from throughout Opeth's entire career, capturing the band at the peak of the "Ghost reveries" world tour. Mixed by Mikael Åkerfeldt and Jens Bogren with artwork by Travis Smith. First edition will be housed in a exclusive box set.

A memorable evening for any Opeth fan took place on September 8 and 9 at the notorious Anchor bar in central Stockholm. Martin Mendez, Axe and Fredrik Åkesson played a (secret) full-on heavy metal cover set fronted by Mats Levén (Krux, ex Yngwie Malmsteen, ex Therion). The setlist (in no order): Fast as a shark (Accept), Disturbing the priest (Black Sabbath), Mob rules (Sabbath), Hole in the sky (Sabbath), Welcome home (King Diamond), Sanitarium (Metallica) Painkiller (Judas Priest) & Victim of changes (Judas Priest).

The much anticipated live album "The Roundhouse Tapes" (Live at the Camden Roundhouse 2006) will be released through Peaceville records on October 22. The double disc venture will feature the following songs:
CD1: "When", "Ghost Of Perdition", "Under The Weeping Moon", "Bleak", "Face Of Melinda", "The Night And The silent waters"
CD2: "Windowpane", "Blackwater Park", "Demon of the Fall"
The (even more anticipated) HD filmed DVD will be released in early 2008. This will also feature (lots of) fan interviews, band interviews, soundcheck footage and live photos + exclusive menu music written by Åkerfeldt and Wiberg.

BREAKING NEWS! OPETH AND PETER LINDGREN PART WAYS
Peter Lindgren has stepped down from his guitar wielding duties after 16 years in Opeth. Below is an open letter from Peter addressing the issue:
"It is with sadness I announce that Opeth and I are going separate ways after almost 16 years. The decision has been the toughest I've ever made but it is the right one to make at this point in my life.
The reason behind this is that I feel that I simply have lost some of the enthusiasm and inspiration needed to participate in a band that has grown from a few guys playing the music we love to a world-wide industry. The love of music has always been, and still is, our motive, but I personally have lost something along the way. The massive amount of touring has taken its toll. Opeth has worked extremely hard to get where we are right now and in order to persist and maintain the quality of the music, it is necessary that we continue to work hard and always stay focused. But in doing so, it means that we nowadays spend 18 or 19 months on the road and I don't feel the same enthusiasm for the upcoming world tour that I have felt earlier. I have come to a point where I realize I won't be able to give the band 100%, and from both sides this will not be good enough for what Opeth stands for. I will always love playing, listening to, and living music, but I will do it differently from now on.
These years has easily been the best of my life and I will always cherish the memory of what we have experienced together. I would like to thank the band, our management, record label people, all the bands I've made friends with for everything. Most of all, I would like to thank the fans from the depth of my heart for the support throughout the years.
I wish Mikael, Martin, Per and Axe all the best and I am confident they will continue doing the greatest music in the world!! /Peter"
REPLACEMENT GUITARIST ANNOUNCED! FREDRIK ÅKESSON (ex. ARCH ENEMY, KRUX) BECOMES FULL TIME MEMBER!

Says Mikael Åkerfeldt: "Well, I think it's too soon right now to fully be able to explain what I feel. Peter and I had been working in this band together for almost half of our lives and we shared some unforgettable experiences together all over the world. We will obviously remain friends and this "break up" has been on very good terms from both sides. We all wish him the best of luck with his future ventures!
Fredrik was the only name that popped up thinking about a replacement for Peter. In my opinion he's one of the top 3 guitar players out of Sweden. We all get along great as we've known each other for maybe 4 years + he already has the experience to take on the circus-like lifestyle we lead as members of Opeth.
I can't wait to see what he can bring to the table musically and also to get out on the roads touring together. His first gig will be at the Ilosaari festival in Finland. I'm sure he'll shit his pants before that one, but then again...so will I!"

Details on Roundhouse/London DVD:The films have now been edited by Dash productions in co-operation with the band and the audio has been mixed at location in Fascination street by Jens Bogren and Mikael Åkerfeldt. The DVD will contain the show (filmed in HD) and with 5.1 surround mix. Band interviews, fan interviews (some hilarious moments here!) as well as photo galleries. A release date hasn't been set but it's hopefully set for a possible Autumn 2007 release. More details/title to follow.

Mikael Åkerfeldt recently performed a song with legendary doom-metal pioneers Candlemass at their 20th anniversary party held in Stockholm on the 31st of March. The song chose was taken from their 1987 record "Nightfall" and called "At the gallows end". Other singers included Tony Martin (Black sabbath), Mats Levén (Krux, Therion, Yngwie Malmsteen), JB (Grand Magus, Spiritual beggars), Tomas Vikström (ex. Candlemass, Talk of the town), and original Candlemass singer Johan Lanquist. Check out some pictures from the gig!

A website called Blindfaith www.blindfaithonline.net has falsely advertising a gig in Hull on November 25th with Opeth headlining. We would like to state that this gig is not confirmed and has never been discussed, this is a blatant attempt to rip fans off and will not be tolerated. It seems that this so called management/promoter organization is little more than a rip off. Please contact webmaster@opeth.com if anyone has bought tickets.

Opeth are confirmed as the metal headliners at the JOENSUU ILOSAARI FESTIVAL in Finland on the 15th of July! This is so far the one and only confirmed concert the band has commited to during 2007.

Mikael has started writing for what is supposed to be the 9th Opeth record and is also working on a as of yet unnamed side project. The members of the band wish to extend a big "thank you" to all our fans worldwide who came and saw us on the "Ghost reveries" world tour 2005/2006. Thanks also to the promoters and agents who made this tour possible. We hope to see you again soon!
